YOUNG CHAMPS PROGRAM

Young Champs is a youth-centered diversion program to help at-risk adolescents ages 10-16 make healthier lifestyle choices and improve their self-esteem, self-confidence and behavior. Our expected outcome is for the adolescents to recognize and take advantage of protective factors and avoid risk factors for delinquent behavior. MSVP is a service provider for the SGA Juvenile Intervention; Support Center (JISC); the Chicago Police Department Diversion Program. It allows arrested youth to have their charges dropped if they attend 1 of our monthly Saturday sessions. Specific responsibilities include long-term planning of Young Champs sessions, crafting proposals for activity funding, and taking a leadership role on day of sessions.

STOP THE BLEED CAMPAIGN

No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will always be first on the scene. The MSVP "Stop the Bleed Campaign" is a training program, led by medical students, to help community members help save the lives of those who may be bleeding. Originally launched during an event at the White House, the Campaign empowers bystanders of emergency situations with the tools and knowledge to stop life threatening situations. People who are bleeding from a trauma can die from blood loss within five minutes, therefore it is important to quickly stop the blood loss. Bystanders can take simple steps to keep the injured person alive until appropriate medical care is available. By putting knowledge gained by first responders into the hands of the public, we can help save lives.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CARE

The Domestic Violence Care Initiative focuses on supporting individuals who have been survivors of intimate partner violence.  This initiative is aimed towards giving medical students an opportunity to form a partnership with a community organization helping victims of domestic violence.
